PEORIA, Ill. – It was the final tune-up before the BIG EAST Conference Championships and the Marquette University men’s and women’s cross country teams made the most of it at the Bradley “Pink” Classic on Friday.

The women’s team took second place, while the men finished in fourth, among more than 30 competing Division I teams combined at the Bradley-hosted meet held at Newman Golf Course.

“Both groups competed well this afternoon,” Marquette head coach Mike Nelson said. “We wanted to leave it all on the course today and did just that by getting out strong and holding our position. Great overall team effort.”

The women placed its top-five scorers in the top-44 overall, led by Jennifer Parker’s 12th-place overall finish in a time of 21:25.1. Mary Hanson was right on her heels, taking 13th, while Jessica Parker (29th), Courtney Dugan (38th) and Lauren Fuqua (44th) all finished within 16 seconds of each other.

Meghan Carroll took sixth on the team and 57th overall, followed by Nora Keller in 100th.

Alec Miller emerged as the men’s top finisher for the first time in four races, taking seventh overall with a time of 24:45.3 – a season-best. Marquette’s top-five all crossed the finish line in the top-52 en route to the fourth-place team finish.

Jon Klaiber was second on the team and 18th overall with a time of 25:07.6, followed by Aric Miller in 27th, Daniel Pederson in 35th and Brad Eagan in 52nd. Ryan Burd (55th) and Henry Mierzwa (76th) had strong efforts as well, sticking together to account for MU’s sixth and seventh finishers.

In the open races that preceded the varsity races, Alison Parker and Linda Varela finished 1-2 on the women’s side, taking seventh and eighth place overall, respectively. For the men, Paolo Tiongson and Danny Peterson were MU’s top finishers, crossing the finish line just 5 seconds apart in 15th and 17th place, respectively.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action in two weeks as they get set to host the 2017 BIG EAST Championships Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Dannehl National XC Course in Kenosha.
