Men's Cross Country 35th at Wisconsin adidas Invitational
Oct. 14, 2011
VERONA, Wis. - Seniors Blake Johnson and Peter Bolgert paced the Marquette men's cross country team for the fifth time this season Friday afternoon at the third annual Wisconsin adidas Invitational at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country course in Verona, Wis. The Golden Eagles placed 35th in a field considered one of the toughest invitational meets ever assembled, with 20 nationally ranked men's teams competing.
"Overall I thought the men did a good job," Marquette head coach Mike Nelson said. "It wasn't a bad race for us but it wasn't a great race either. We definitely have a lot more left in the tank. The guys were not intimidated by the competition, but we hoped to accomplish a little bit more."
Johnson led the Marquette men with a 127th-place finish in 24:59.3, while Bolgert crossed the finish line a little more than six seconds after Johnson in 25:04.9 to finish 144th.
Wisconsin captured the meet title at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.
Meanwhile, the women's team ran at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., where it finished ninth. Freshman Elisia Meyle led the women with a 30th place finish in 22:15.49 and was followed by seniors Kate Horan, Alyssa Beste and Courtney Kelly. Sophomore Christina Sliepka was MU's fifth-place finisher.
"I thought the ladies ran really well," Nelson said. "They had their strongest race of the year and are continuing to make progress. I am happy with how they are doing. I think that our conference meet in two weeks will be our best meet of the year on both sides."
Missouri took home the women's title at the Bradley Classic.
The Golden Eagles return to action at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
