TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Marquette cross country squad competed in the NCAA Pre-Nationals Saturday morning against some of the top teams in the nation. A total of 58 ranked men's and women's squads competed in the 164-team field that was held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., and hosted by Indiana State University.
On the men's side, senior co-captain Kyle Saginus led the way with a time of 24:35.5 in the men's blue 8K race to finish 63rd overall. Just over a minute later, Brice Cleland crossed the finish line in 24:57.6, followed by Nick Szczech in 25:28.7, freshman Blake Johnson in 25:44.8 and co-captain Drew Craig in 26:04.0. Freshman Keith Schueller (26:15.6) and senior Mark Kopecki (26:44.8) also ran for the men but failed to finish among the top five finishers. The men finished 30th in their race.
" I was happy with how the men did this afternoon," said Nelson. "Kyle ran a really strong race to continue the way he has been running, while Nick (Szczech) and Blake (Johnson) ran solid races as well."
In the women's 6K blue race, which kicked off competition at 10 a.m., CT, sophomore Laurie Dalrymple paced the team, finishing the race in 21:45.9, leading MU to finish 26th in their race. Anna Weber was the second MU runner to cross the finish line in 21:59.2, while co-captain Amanda Beggs finished in 22:05.8. Maureen Keane finished fourth on Marquette with a time of 22:37.2 and freshman Kate Horan rounded out the MU point-scorers with a time of 22:55.0. Olivia Johnson also ran but finished sixth on the squad with a time of 24:32.1 and Jayne Grebinski failed to finish.
"The women were looking good through the first 4K of the race but struggled down the stretch," said head coach Mike Nelson.
The team returns to action on Halloween in New York at Van Cortlandt Park for the 2008 BIG EAST Championships.
