Marquette Cross Country Teams Finish Seventh in BIG EAST Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Both the men's and women's Marquette cross country teams earned a seventh place finish at the 2007 BIG EAST Championships held at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday. The men finished with 190 team points, while the women earned 166. The mne's team scored dropped 42 points from their standing last year, showing significant improvement. Senior Scott Mueller led the Golden Eagle men finishing 24th overall with a time of 24:31.55. Senior Kyle Saginus ran the 8K in 24:44.85 earning 31st place, while freshman Nick Szczech earned 35th place finishing in 24:47.75. Freshman Brice Cleland ran a 24:56.35 and Senior Cody Miles finished in 25:48.80, finishing in 39th and 61st respectively. "I was really happy with the way the men ran today," head coach Mike Nelson said. "From a team perspective this was definitely the best race we have run all year. From top to bottom we had individuals running their best race of the year." The Louisville Cardinals men's squad captured the conference championship, while Bobby Curtis of Villanova won the men's individual title on the 8K trail with a course-record time of 23:08.85. The Marquette women's team was led by sophomore Jayne Grebinski ran the 6K in 21:23.35 earning 19th place. Senior Cassie Peller followed finishing 21st in 21:25.60. Sophomore Ana Weber earned 27th place as she ran a time of 21:36.50. Finishing 46th and 53rd respectively, senior Kaitlyn Chambers ran the course in 22:03.35 and sophomore Amanda Beggs finished with a time of 22:20.45.
"On the women's side I was very happy overall," Nelson said. "Our goal was just to have each individual run their best race and overall that was the case today." The West Virginia Mountaineers women's squad captured the conference title, while Melissa Grelli of Georgetown won the women's 6K race with a course-record time of 20:05.55. |
