JAMESVILLE, N.Y. - The Marquette University men's cross country team finished eighth, while the women placed 10th, Saturday morning in the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Championships, hosted by Syracuse University, at the Jamesville Beach Park.

Senior Brice Cleland, running in his fourth and final BIG EAST Championship, placed 31st overall in 26:16.6 and was followed immediately in 32nd by redshirt freshman Jack Senefeld in 26:18.7. Cleland's finish marked the highest of his career after finishing 37th, 35th and 39th in his previous conference championship meets. Senefeld stuck with Cleland and ran an impressive race for someone competing in his first BIG EAST Championships.

"It might not have been the ideal place on the men's side, but man-for-man, I thought they ran pretty well," head coach Mike Nelson said. "It was a very tough course, which was extremely muddy, but everyone moved up and I am happy with how they performed."

The men's performance is the second-best place total they have accumulated since joining the BIG EAST Conference in 2005. The 198 places is second to the 190 places accrued when the men placed seventh in 2007.

Junior Blake Johnson also placed in the top 40 for the men with a 38th-place finish in 26:30.2, while team co-captain Peter Bolgert recorded the best finish of his career in 44th with a time of 26:38.7.

Rounding out the top five for the men was Jack Hackett in 53rd place (27:10.2), while Connor Callahan (56th, 27:23.9) and Keith Schuller (58th, 27:28.6) each placed in the top 60 overall and in the top seven for the Marquette men.

The women were led by Olivia Johnson's 47th-place finish in 22:53.8, while sophomore Carly Windt put in a good race to place second on the Golden Eagles in 23:10.2 (58th overall).

Following Johnson and Windt were Bekki Misanin (62nd, 23:25.5) and freshman Grace Magliola (23:32.2), each in their first BIG EAST Championships.

"Carly Windt ran the best race of her collegiate career today and Bekki Misanin also ran a great, great race. Both of them along with Grace Magliola performed very well today and I was extremely pleased with them, in particular," Nelson said.

Senior Laurie Dalrymple rounded out Marquette's top five in 66th place (23:34.6), while Carly Condon (67th, 23:34.6) and Kate Horan (73rd, 23:49.1) also placed in the top seven.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Rochester Hills, Mich.
