Women's XC Places Fifth and Men Sixth at BIG EAST Meet
Oct. 31, 2014
CARMEL, Ind. - The Marquette University women's cross country team placed fifth overall to notch their second-best finish at the 2014 BIG EAST Conference Championships on Friday morning at the Northview Church Cross Country Course in Carmel, Indiana. The women's squad recorded 131 total places in the 6,000-meter championship race, while the men were sixth in the 8k with 185 places.
Georgetown captured with women's title, led by overall champion Katrina Coogan, while Villanova's Patrick Tiernan won the men's title for the second year in a row to help the Wildcat men to a team championship.
“It was a very solid race for our ladies,” Marquette head coach Mike Nelson said. “Our main goal was to improve upon our finish and point total from last year and we did that. We had some folks who ran well and overall it was a solid day. The ladies were in really good company today and this is an elite conference.”
Junior Kellie Greenwood paced the Marquette women for the 11th time in the last 12 meets with a mark of 21:47.5, which is the fastest time at the league meet for an MU runner since Anna Weber clocked in at 21:37 in 2008. Greenwood, who also led MU at last year's championship, placed 20th overall, which is the top MU finish since Jayne Grebinski was 19th in 2007.
Greenwood was followed by freshman Jennifer Parker in a time of 21:59.3 (23rd place), while sophomore Brittney Feivor placed in the top 30 for the second time in as many years with a time of 22:07.2 (29th).
Running in her fourth BIG EAST meet, senior Elisia Meyle was MU's sixth runner (44th) in a time of 22:44.4 and sophomore Mariah Frank rounded out the top seven for the MU women with a time of 22:50.0 (46th).
On the men's side, redshirt junior Blake Lawson (38th overall) ran a time of 25:37.6 to lead the Golden Eagles for the second time this season after placing 32nd at last year's meet. Freshman Alec Miller was MU's second finisher just over 11 seconds later with a 41st-place finish (25:48.9).
“Our top three guys did run well, but the course was sloppy – wet and muddy,” Nelson said of the men’s squad. “It was a challenging course and the times that our guys put up were really pretty solid. We were hoping to finish a little bit better than we did but as I look at the results, I think the guys who scored for us had arguably their best races of the year. That was the best race of the season for Blake Lawson and William Hennessy. We had four freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors in our top seven today so we are pretty young and headed in the right direction.”
Hennessy, a junior ran a time of 25:54.7 to finish 43rd and freshman Jack Carpenter was 46th in 26:05.7.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Wisconsin Open in Verona, Wisconsin at the Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
