“Overall, very solid performance from both teams and I’m very happy with our efforts today,” head coach Mike Nelson said. “You always want to leave this meet having placed a little higher, but when your athletes give their max efforts, you always leave satisfied. I think we’re walking away from here knowing we gave it everything we had.”
The women’s race kicked off the regional meet with Marquette entering competition ranked 13th in the regional rankings. The Golden Eagles would finish one spot ahead of that and in front of meet host Indiana State.
“We’ve got several seniors on the women’s side and, to see them with a great effort in the last race, I’m very proud with the way they competed,” Nelson said. “It was also nice to move up ahead of our regional ranking.”
Senior Jennifer Parker took 41st place overall, a solid finish in a race comprised of more than 220 runners and 12 spots better than a season ago. MU’s top-five all averaged better than 6 minutes per mile.
Redshirt junior Jessica Parker wasn’t far behind in 59th, while senior Megan Carroll capped her career with an impressive 77th place finish. Rounding out the team’s top-seven was redshirt sophomore Courtney Dugan (86th), junior Mary Hanson (88th), graduate student Lauren Fuqua (102nd) and sophomore Caitlin McGauley (135th).
The men’s team, which placed 14th overall, was led by senior Alec Miller’s 62nd place finish. The West Bend, Wis., native averaged 5:12 per mile to finish slightly ahead of sophomore teammate Daniel Pederson (66th). Both were named All-BIG EAST after finishing in 17th and eighth place, respectively, at the league championship meet back on Oct. 28.
“In the men’s race, we really moved up well throughout,” Nelson said. “I thought the guys ran a great last mile. It was really nice to see them finish that way.”
The Golden Eagle men were rounded with junior Jon Klaiber (78th), junior Brad Eagan (86th), redshirt junior Aric Miller (105th), redshirt sophomore Ryan Burd (130th) and junior Henry Mierzwa (135th). A solid result for a field consisting of nearly 200 runners.
