MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams have earned 2011 Division I All-Academic mentions, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced this week.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the program must have a cumulative team grade point average of 3.00 or better from the fall semester and have started at least five runners at its respective NCAA regional championship.

The Marquette women achieved Division I All-Academic marks with a cumulative GPA of 3.54 from the fall semester. A total of 205 women's teams qualified for the all-academic award, 14 of which were fellow BIG EAST Conference members.

In the fall, MU had seven runners compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Region Championship, finishing 17th at the event.

On the men's side, Marquette earned a cumulative GPA of 3.15 and was one of 147 institutions, including 11 from the BIG EAST, to achieve all-academic status.

The team sent seven representatives to the NCAA Great Lakes Region Championships last fall and finished eighth at the event, its highest finish at a NCAA regional championship since 2007.

The USTFCCCA named Wisconsin and Georgetown as its men's and women's scholar teams of the year, respectively.
