Both Cross Country Squads Honored As USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams

March 5, 2009

MILWAUKEE -- Both the Marquette men's and women's cross country squads were named to the 2008 NCAA Division I United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association All-Academic Team, the USTFCCCA announced Thursday. Senior runner Kyle Saginus was also named to the USTFCCCA Men's All-Academic Team.

"The sport of cross country tends to attract the type of individuals that are hard working in everything that they do," said head coach Mike Nelson. "With that being said, it does not surprise me in the least that our teams recorded such high GPAs this fall. It is an expectation of our program and the type of athletes that we recruit that they work hard in the classroom as well as on the roads."

The women recorded a cumulative grade point average of 3.453 during the 2008 fall semester, while the men registered an average of 3.314. Among their counterparts the men finished 33rd out of 110 squads to make the cut, while the women placed 52nd out of 160 squads.

Marquette was one of 11 BIG EAST Conference members represented on the list, tying the Big Ten for the most representatives.

For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average.

Saginus was one of 40 Division I athletes honored with the selection. This fall Saginus finished 15th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and 12th at the 2008 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, becoming MU's first male runner to earn All-BIG EAST distinction.

"Kyle has been an excellent leader for this team, not only in races but also in the classroom," Nelson said. "He has a way about him that he always seems to come up big when it matters most."

For a student-athlete to be selected, they had to finish among the top-15 finishers at their respective regional and maintain a grade point average of 3.25. Saginus was one of four BIG EAST athletes to be named to the team.
