MILWAUKEE – Head coach Mike Nelson and the Marquette University men’s and women’s cross country teams have announced their schedule for the 2012 season, which will include potential repeat trips to Wisconsin and Louisville.

“Competing in familiar environments gives our athletes the advantage of knowing what to expect,” Nelson said. “No two races are exactly the same and the field can vary from year to year, but it is beneficial to be familiar with each course.  We’ll be well prepared as we go into each competition.”

The Golden Eagles head to the NIU Huskie Open for their first meet of the season on Friday, Sept. 7 in DeKalb, Ill., and will compete the following weekend at the National Catholic Championships in Notre Dame, Ind., for the third-straight year.

The Marquette men put up a strong showing at the 2011 National Catholic Championships by finishing second with departed senior Blake Johnson leading the way in fifth place overall. The MU men return their 3-through-5 runners from that meet in Jack Hackett, Connor Callahan and Jack Senefeld, while the women welcome back their top-two finishers, Kenzie Vicker and Hannah Frett.

The Golden Eagles will once again compete at Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Sept. 29 at E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park, where the men placed sixth and the women 20th in 2011. The women’s top finisher at last season’s meet, sophomore-to-be Elisia Meyle, returns for a second go round after leading the Golden Eagles in their final four meets in 2011.

Louisville hosted the 2011 BIG EAST Championships and will host this season’s NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 17.

“All of the training and racing we do during August, September and early October is preparation for the championship portion of our season,” Nelson said. “ I believe this schedule sets us up well to be at our best when it matters the most.”

The Marquette men will send split squads to the Bradley Classic and Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday, Oct. 12, while the women will join half of the men at Bradley. The annual meet at Wisconsin is generally considered one of the most loaded fields outside the NCAA Championships and the Golden Eagles’ 3-5 runners at that meet from last season Senefeld, Patrick Maag and Hackett, will look to top their 2011 performance.

Following an off week, the Golden Eagles will compete at the 2012 BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 26 at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The men look to build on a seventh-place finish in 2011 as three of their top four runners return, all of whom placed in the top 45.

Marquette will again compete at Wisconsin in the 2012 NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Verona, Wis. The men placed eighth at the meet in 2011, their best regional finish since 2007, while the women were 17th at the Ottawa Park Golf Course in Toledo, Ohio.

The annual Marquette Alumni Run will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Valley Fields.
