Cross Country Announces 2011 Fall Schedule

MILWAUKEE – Head coach Mike Nelson has announced the Marquette University men’s and women’s cross country schedules for the 2011 fall campaign.
“We are very excited to announce the 2011 Marquette University cross country schedule,” Nelson said. “We have made a few changes to the meets in September and early October that lead up to the championship part of our season to prepare us thoroughly for that time. Our main goal is to finish as high as possible in both the BIG EAST Championships and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships. Our athletes will be up to the challenge and we’re excited for another season of Marquette cross country.”
The Golden Eagles begin the season on Friday, Sept. 2 at the Crusader Open in Valparaiso, Ind., at Sunset Hills Farm. The meet, hosted by Valparaiso University, is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Central time.
The following week, both squads travel to Verona, Wis., for the Badger Open at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. It will be the first trip of the season to the University of Wisconsin for the Marquette men, who are scheduled for a return trip on Friday, Oct. 14 for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.
The Golden Eagles head to Notre Dame, Ind., at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16 for the National Catholic Championship. In 2010, Marquette notched second and third-place finishes in the men’s and women’s meets, respectively, while sophomore Jack Senefeld and then-senior Olivia Johnson and placed seventh in their respective races.
On the first weekend of October, Marquette travels to Louisville, Ky., for the Greater Louisville Classic at E. P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park, also the site of the 2011 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships. The Greater Louisville Classic is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. CT.
The Marquette women will head to the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., on Oct. 14, while the men return to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin adidas Inivitational. The Bradley Classic is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on the Newman Golf Course.
After a weekend to recuperate, the Golden Eagles will head back to Louisville for the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 29, with competition beginning at 9:30 a.m. The men placed eighth at last season’s championships, while the women finished 10th.
This year’s NCAA Great Lakes Regional will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Ottawa Park Golf Course in Toledo, Ohio. The 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships are held at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 21.
Marquette will host its annual Alumni Run for former track and field and cross country student-athletes on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Veteran’s Park along Milwaukee’s Lakefront.
