Marquette Cross Country Names 2012 Captains
July 20, 2012
MILWAUKEE – Senior women’s distance runners Melissa Budelier and Christina Sliepka along with men’s senior Patrick Maag and junior Jack Senefeld will serve as captains in 2012 for the Marquette University women’s and men’s cross country squads, head coach Mike Nelson announced Friday.
“In keeping with the leadership we have had recently on this squad, all four captains are true student-athletes,” Nelson said. “They succeed in the classroom and on the track and cross country course. They are leaders in every sense of the word.”
Maag (Lake Oswego, Ore./Jesuit) and Senefeld (Plover, Wis./Stevens Point Area) both were constant members of the men’s top seven last season, with Senefeld placing in Marquette’s top three at both the 2011 BIG EAST Conference and NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships. Each recorded season-best 8k marks at the BIG EAST meet, Maag with a time of 25:08.0 and Senefeld with a mark of 24:38.6 in a 40th-place finish.
“Patrick and Jack have set the bar high when it comes to training and the rest of the team tends to follow them,” Nelson said. “If the other guys on the team follow them, they will be successful and make us that much better collectively.”
Budelier (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) and Sliepka (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) have each earned three letters in cross country at Marquette, while Sliepka competed in both the 2011 BIG EAST and NCAA Regional Championships.
“Christina and Melissa have begun the process of applying to medical school and they have set a high bar academically and athletically,” Nelson said. “Melissa, in particular, has worked herself into a solid competitor for us. Both are consistently hard workers and will help the team from leadership positions this year.”
The Golden Eagles begin the 2012 campaign on Friday, Sept. 7 at the NIU Huskie Open in DeKalb, Ill., at the NIU North 40.
