Cross Country Announces 2010 Schedule
Aug. 10, 2010
MILWAUKEE - Three in-state meets highlight the 2010 Marquette University cross country schedule announced Tuesday by head coach Mike Nelson.
“We’re very excited to announce our 2010 cross country schedule," Nelson said. "We believe that this schedule sets us up well to be at our best for the BIG EAST Championships and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Overall, this schedule gives us a great opportunity to have Marquette represented at the NCAA Championships.”
Saturday, August 28 the MU cross country season unofficially begins with the third annual Alumni Run in Milwaukee. The run will take place at 10 a.m. at Bay View Park.
Nelson's squad officially begins its season on Friday, Sept. 3 in Madison at the Badger Classic. MU will be looking for its season to begin much like it did last year when both the men's and women's teams took first in the season's opening meet.
Marquette hits the road on Friday, Sept. 17 to compete in its first meet outside the state of Wisconsin at Notre Dame for the National Catholic Invitational.
"We have not competed at the National Catholic Invite since 2006, so we are excited to return to that great competition," said Nelson.
The Golden Eagles then return to Wisconsin for the Carthage College Invitational in Kenosha, Wis. Marquette had two meets in Kenosha last season including the BIG EAST Championships, which it hosted for the first time on Oct. 31.
Marquette heads back to Madison for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 2. The Golden Eagles participated in this same event a season ago and will look to build on their performance from last year.
"We are really looking forward to improving our performance at the Wisconsin Invitational," said Nelson. "We had a rough meet last year, but with the opportunity to race the course early in the season at the Badger Classic, we should be well prepared for this extremely competitive meet."
MU will face a very competitive field at the NCAA Pre-Nationals Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 16.
"The NCAA Pre-National meet is always one of the most competitive cross country races in the nation and racing in that meet really gets our athletes ready for the BIG EAST Championships," Nelson said.
Following the NCAA Pre-National meet the Golden Eagles head to Jamesville, N.Y. for the BIG EAST Championships. Last year MU hosted the BIG EAST Championships and both the men's and women's teams placed in the top-10 as the men placed seventh and the women took home the eight spot. Both squads will look to improve on last year's marks.
"The BIG EAST Championship cross country meet is always a top priority for us," said Nelson. "We look forward to representing Marquette to the best of our abilities."
For their last meet of the season, Marquette will travel to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 13 in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA National Championships.
"The NCAA Great Lakes Regional will be hosted by Oakland University and our plan is to make big improvements over last year’s placing."
