Aug. 20, 2008

MILWAUKEE - Saturday, August 23 the Marquette cross country season unofficially opens as the "Blue & Gold Alumni Race" will be held at Bayview Park in St. Francis. All Marquette track and field and cross country alumni are invited and encouraged to participate in the two mile-long race. Festivities will begin at 10:00 a.m.

"We are reviving an event that is very special to Marquette University cross country," said head cross country coach Mike Nelson. "This is a chance for the current athletes to meet and learn from those who have gone before them."

The main goal of the event is to bring together former Marquette track and field and cross country alumni with the current student-athletes for a friendly competition. A barbecue will follow once the races have concluded.

"This will also serve as a team time-trial," Nelson said. "It gives the coaching staff a chance to evaluate the fitness of our runners for the upcoming season."

The MU cross country season will officially start Aug. 30 in St. Louis, Mo. for the Big River Running Early Bird meet.
