MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University cross country teams will participate in the Big River Running Early Bird on Saturday, August 30 in their first official meet of the season, held at Central Fields in Forest Park in St. Louis, Mo.
"This will be an early season test for the squad to check their fitness level," said head cross country coach Mike Nelson. "I told the team that this will be a 'rust-buster,' in that the race is not the official length but will give us a chance to evaluate ourselves."
Hosted by Washington University, the women's 4K race will kick off at 9 a.m., while the men's will begin 30 minutes later.
Among the 26 schools participating are Bradley, Illinois Wesleyan, Lincoln University, Missouri State, Saint Louis University and Tennessee-Martin, in addition to Washington University.
The current Golden Eagles held their own Blue & Gold Alumni Race last Saturday, with track and field senior Scott Mueller, senior Kyle Saginus and sophomore Nick Szczech finishing 1-2-3, and juniors Jayne Grebinski and sophomore Olivia Johnson finishing in the top two on the women's side.
Top returnees for the Marquette women include Grebinski, and fellow juniors Anna Weber, and Beggs. For the men, Saginus, Szczech, and sophomores Brice Cleland and Nick Szczech, who all finished in the top four of the final four meets of last season, return.
