Cross Country Begins 2011 Season at Crusader Open
Sept. 1, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams open the 2011 season Friday afternoon at the Crusader Open in Valparaiso, Ind., at Sunset Hills Park.
Action begins at 5 p.m. Central time with the women's five kilometer run, followed by the men's 6K at 5:45 p.m.
"I am looking for solid races," said Marquette head cross country coach Mike Nelson. "We have never run this course before and the men are running an odd distance in 6K. It is going to be an interesting meet because if you look at the forecast it is supposed to be about 93 degrees on Friday."
With temperatures expected to be in the upper-90s, Nelson and the other coaches are expected to alter their race plans accordingly and the race itself may be as well.
"Extremely warm conditions like that for distance runners are not great, so my goal is to go there and have a strong performance without going overboard," Nelson said. "I have already talked to the guys and ladies about running together and keeping it under control. We don't want to lose anybody to any sort of heat-related illness. We are going to work together as a group and run the race together."
In addition to Marquette and Valparaiso, teams from Northwestern, Western Michigan and BIG EAST-rival Notre Dame will also be competing.
The men enter the season ranked 12th in the Great Lakes Region preseason poll by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while the women are unranked.
