Marquette Cross Country Heads to Illinois for NIU Huskie Invitational

Sept. 11, 2008

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette cross country squad will travel to DeKalb, Ill., to take part in the NIU Huskie Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 13. The women will start at 12:15 p.m., with the men set to begin at 1 p.m.

"This meet is another chance for us to test our fitness as we get close to the heavier part of the schedule," said head cross country coach Mike Nelson. "This is a fairly flat course and I am interested in seeing how our younger runners finish."

After competing at the Big River Running Early Bird two weeks ago, both the men and women look to build on promising finishes as the course lengths get closer to BIG EAST Championship sizes. The women will run a 5k race, which is 1k longer than the course at the Big River meet, while the men will run their normal 8k run.

For the women, top runners Jayne Grebinski, Olivia Johnson, Anna Weber, Amanda Beggs and Kristin Pelzel will sit out while the other runners on the squad get an opportunity to prove what they can do. Tulane-transfer Laurie Dalrymple will get her first chance to run for the Golden Eagles, after a freshman season at Tulane which saw her earn All-Conference USA Third Team honors in addition to being named the Louisana Sportswriters Association Cross Country Freshman of the Year.

As for the men, six men will run for Marquette this weekend while another three will run unattached.

"This really should be a good meet to see where the men are at in terms of training," Nelson said. "For the freshman, it will be their first opportunity to run at this distance, which will be an extra ten minutes or so of running. It will be great to see their reactions."

Also competing in the meet with MU and the host NIU Huskies will be Wisconsin, UWM, Green Bay and Augustana College.
