Cross Country Set for Second Meet of the Season
Sept. 13, 2007
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette cross country teams return to action this weekend in the Midwest Collegiate meet at UW-Parkside. After a first place finish by the women and a third place team finish by the men August 31 at the Illini Open, the Golden Eagles travel down the western shore of Lake Michigan looking for continued success. The meet kicks off at noon with the women's 5K race followed by the men's 8K at 12:45 p.m.
At the Illini Open, sophomore Jayne Grebinski paced Marquette and captured the overall victory on the women's side finishing in 14:26. With six runners among the top 12 finishers, Marquette captured its first team victory of the season with 28 points to runner-up Illinois State's 31.
Head coach Mike Nelson would like to see much of the same this weekend from his squad. "Last week we accomplished what we set out to accomplish," said Nelson. "We got our feet wet and got to see where we stood fitness-wise. This weekend's race is another good chance to evaluate ourselves physically before we get into a very tough part of our schedule."
One of the two men's runners who coach Nelson held out last week will be running for the first time this season.
"Scott (Mueller) is good to go this weekend and Kyle (Saginus) will probably be ready next week," Nelson said. "He has been recovering from an injury and should be running within the week."
The race will include men's and women's squads from UW-Green Bay, MSOE and various others from around the region.
