MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams return to action Friday, Sept. 17 at the National Catholic Invitational on the Burke Memorial Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind. The men's and women's open races will begin at 2:30 p.m. Central Time, while the women's 5,000-meter race will commence at 3:15 p.m. and the men's five-mile race will follow at 4 p.m. CT.
In addition to the host Fighting Irish, the meet will feature Catholic colleges and universities from across the country, including Detroit-Mercy, Dayton, San Francisco, Holy Cross, Canisius, Siena and St. Mary's (Calif.).
The Golden Eagles return to action for the first time since taking second in both of the men's and women's races at the Badger Classic on Sept. 3. In that meet, senior Olivia Johnson took home the top spot on the women's side with a time of 14:20, while the men were paced by senior Brice Cleland who led MU's top-five finishers in spots 6-10.
Marquette last competed at the National Catholic Invitational on Sept. 21, 2001 when the women captured the meet title and the men finished as runner-up to Notre Dame. Former MU track and field all-American Brianna Dahm led the women with a second-place finish in 17:36, while the men were paced by Joe Herington's fourth-place finish in 24:46. That season, the Marquette women recorded a 15th-place finish, their highest ever, at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
