Golden Eagles Head to National Catholic Championships
Sept. 15, 2011
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the 32nd Annual National Catholic Championships on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Notre Dame Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind.
The women will run a 5-kilometer race starting at 3:15 p.m. Central time, with the men's 5-mile race following at 4 p.m. CT. There will also be men's and women's JV races beginning at 2:30 p.m. CT.
Last year the MU men's and women's teams placed second and third, respectively. Then-redshirt freshman Jack Senefeld was the top finisher for the Golden Eagles, placing seventh overall with a time of 24:59.
The Marquette men's team has captured team titles in its first two meets of the season, at Valparaiso's Crusader Open and Wisconsin's Badger Opener. Senior Blake Johnson led the way for MU at Wisconsin in a time of 18:21, while classmate Peter Bolgert finished third overall with a 6K time of 18:24.6.
Sophomore Sarah Ball recorded a career-best 5K time of 18:54.6 at the Badger Opener and was Marquette's top finisher, 15th overall, while leading the MU women to a second place finish.
Marquette has had a very impressive showing over the history of the event, winning the first three meets on the men's side. Dave_Uhrich captured an individual title in 1982, followed by four straight championships by 1986 NCAA 10,000-meter run track and field champion Keith Hanson. Hanson is one of only two men's runners in the history of the meet to notch four individual titles.
The MU women also won the meet in 1995, 2001 and 2006.
