MILWAUKEE- The Marquette University cross country squad will travel to Kenosha, Wis., Saturday to take part in the Midwest Collegiate Open at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. The women's 5K race will begin at noon followed by the men's 8K race at 12:45 p.m.

"I would say that as our meets goes on, the level of importance of those meets definitely goes up," said head coach Mike Nelson. "It is a very important meet for us to view the course and get to know the ins and outs of that course. Our athletes can start to develop their racing strategy of how they would run at the conference meet.

"There will be a couple of BIG EAST schools coming to the meet and it will be nice to run against them because we don't always get to run against BIG EAST schools during the regular season. It will be a great shot for our team in many different aspects."

Leading the women once again is senior Jayne Grebinski, who captured the individual overall title in the squad's opening meet, the DePaul Invitational on Sept. 4. Grebinski led a pack of three MU women at the top of the leaderboard, followed closely by juniors Olivia Johnson and Kristin Pelzel, in second and third place, respectively.

On the men's side, the team is led by junior Nick Szczech who finished the six kilometer race in just over 20 minutes (20:00.82) at the DePaul Invitational. Sophomore Blake Johnson finished fourth, two spots behind Szczech, while Connor Callahan led a group of MU men from 9th-13th place.
