XC Heads to National Catholic Championships

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's cross country squads travel around the southern end of Lake Michigan on Friday, Sept. 20 for the 34th annual National Catholic Championships in Notre Dame, Ind.

The meet at the Notre Dame Golf Course will kick off with a junior varsity race open to men and women at 2:30 p.m. Central time, followed by the women's 5-kilometer championship at 3:15 p.m. CT. The men's championship (5 miles) will commence at 4 p.m. CT.

Marquette's women's squad placed third at last season's championship with Elisia Meyle (19th, 18:11.0) returning in 2013 as its top returning finisher. Sophomore Cody Haberkorn is the men's top returner from last year and helped the team to a third-place finish at the meet with a time of 25:51 to place 33rd overall.

Marquette's men's squad claimed the first three team titles (1980-82) in the championship, which dates back to 1980, while former MU All-American Keith Hanson (1983-86) claimed three individual titles and Dave Uhrich one. The women have won three team titles (1995, 2001, 2006).

LAST TIME OUT: The Marquette University men's cross country team placed third, and the women fourth, on Friday, Sept. 6 in the 2013 Badger Season Opener at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Verona, Wis. Redshirt senior Spencer Agnew paced the men with an eighth-place overall finish (18:46; 6k), while sophomore Kellie Greenwood was fifth overall to lead the women (14:23; 4k).


• The Golden Eagles will host the 2013 BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Championships in Somers, Wis., at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course on Saturday, Nov. 2. It marks the first time MU has hosted the cross country championships since doing so at the same course in 2009.

• Head coach Mike Nelson is in his seventh season with the Golden Eagles in 2013.

• Redshirt senior Jack Senefeld is the only returning student-athlete to have run in the last three conference championships and has also run in a pair of NCAA Great Lakes Regional meets.

• Senior Hannah Frett leads the MU women with two appearances in both the BIG EAST and regional championships.

UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
