MILWAUKEE - With three consecutive meets to open the 2011 cross country campaign, the Marquette men's and women's teams took some time last week to regroup and focus on the final four meets of the season.

GoMarquette.com caught up with the squads Friday afternoon for a hill workout on Milwaukee's Lakefront. The runners ran three miles from the Marquette Gym down to Lake Michigan and north to Lafayette Hill across from McKinley Park.

The Golden Eagles began last week with an easy 5-7 mile run for the men (4-6 miles for the women) followed by 400-, 300-, 200- and 100-meter sprints with a 200-meter jog recovery between each. The group also completed a lunge circuit and did dynamic stretching and core work.

Tuesday's workout consisted of a 4-7 mile run around 7 a.m. before the teams split into groups for weight training in the afternoon.

A rigorous workout took place Wednesday afternoon in Cudahy, Wis., as the men's team completed a 6-8 mile tempo, working its way down to 5:20 a mile, while the women's squad did a progressive 4-6 mile progressive tempo to get near the six minute mark.

After a morning lifting session on Thursday, the runners recovered from Wednesday's tempo run and prepared for Friday's hill workout.

Over the weekend a large group of runners used Sunday's Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to get in some extra miles.

The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
