Oct. 2, 2008

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette cross country team returns to action on Fri., Oct. 3 at the Notre Dame Invitational.

"We are excited to run again because we haven't raced as a full squad since Aug. 30," said head coach Mike Nelson. "We are ready to see what we can do against some of the best competition in the United States."

The meet is the squad's third of the season after having competed on Aug. 30 at the Big River Running Early Bird and on Sept. 13 at the NIU Huskie Invitational. Most of the team competed in the Big River meet, while MU's top finishers were held out of the NIU meet to prepare for the Notre Dame meet.

"It is going to be the most competitive meet in the nation this weekend," said Nelson.

A total of 60 schools will be sending teams to the meet, including 19 ranked squads, seven on the men's side and 12 on the women's.

The meet will kick off with the women's gold division race at 2 p.m. (EDT) and the men's gold division at 2:45 p.m. Marquette will race in the blue division races, which will commence with the women's race at 4:15 p.m., followed by the men's race at 5 p.m.

Started in 1956 and run continuously ever since, the Notre Dame Invitational is one of the nation's oldest and largest intercollegiate cross country meets.

The MU men are ranked No. 7 in the Great Lakes region while the women are ranked No. 9 in their respective polls.
