MILWAUKEE –
The Marquette University men’s and women’s cross country teams gear up for its final meet before the start of the championship portion of the season, heading to Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill. to compete in the Bradley “Pink” Classic Friday, Oct. 13.

The Golden Eagles will take on 31 NCAA Division I teams in what will be the final race before conference championships get underway. Both the men’s and women’s open races begin at 2:30 p.m. Central time, followed by the men’s varsity race (8K) at 3:15 p.m. and the women’s varsity race (6K) at 4 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to this very competitive meet that will be everyone’s last opportunity or tune-up before the championship portion of the season,” Marquette head coach Mike Nelson said.

While many runners outside the team’s traditional top-seven raced a solid effort at the Lucien Rosa Invitational at UW-Parkside back on Oct. 7, Nelson opted to give several of his top runners on each side the meet off. Instead, they opted for a challenging workout at the Dannehl National XC Course, which is the site of the BIG EAST Championships.

“It was good to have a little bit of a mental break for some of those athletes,” Nelson said. “For those that raced, it was great for them to have an opportunity and that will help them prepare for this meet.”

The next time the Golden Eagles hit the course will be the 2017 BIG EAST Championships, which MU will serve as the meet host for the first time since 2013.
