MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Peoria, Illinois to run in the Bradley “Pink” Classic at the Newman Golf Course on Friday, Oct. 17.

While no MU women are slated to compete in the women’s 6,000-meter open race, it kicks off action at 3 p.m., while the men’s 8,000-meter open race will start at 3:40 p.m. The women’s 6k championship will follow at 4:25 p.m. before the men’s 8k championship concludes the day’s festivities at 5:05 p.m.

“We're excited to compete again this year at the Bradley ‘Pink’ Classic,” Marquette head cross country coach Mike Nelson said. “In addition to being a competitive meet, this event also raises awareness for breast cancer.  Athletes are allowed to wear an additional race bib on their backs with the hand written name of someone they know who has been affected by breast cancer.  Our athletes always gain some extra inspiration knowing they are making a difference.”

Twelve members of the women’s team are scheduled to compete in the championship, including junior Kellie Greenwood, who has paced the Golden Eagles in each of their first three meets this season. The men’s team will also have 12 runners in the championship race, while six Golden Eagles will run in the men’s open race, with Michael Corr and Christian Zambrano doing so unattached.

Freshman Alec Miller led the men’s team in the first two meets of the season and third on the squad in the Golden Eagles last meet at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis on Saturday, Sept. 27.

The women’s team placed 25th at the Les Bolstad Golf Course for the Roy Griak, while the men were 28th. Greenwood led the women with a 6k time of 22:39.2, while redshirt junior team captain Blake Lawson was the men’s top runner in a time of 27:01.1.

“In terms of training, we have had an outstanding three week stretch,” Nelson said. “The workouts and long runs have been going great.  I believe the athletes are set up well to race fast in Peoria and during the championship portion of our season.”

Following Friday’s action in Peoria, the Golden Eagles will travel to Indianapolis for the 2014 BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Championships at Northview Church on Friday, Oct. 31, where they will compete in their 10th championship since entering the league for the 2005-06 academic year.
