Marquette Cross Country Set to Compete at NCAA Pre-Nationals

Oct. 17, 2008

MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette cross country squad returns to action on Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind., at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course for the NCAA Pre-Nationals.

"This is the most competitive cross country meet in the country, on any level," said head coach Mike Nelson. "Teams will be out there running for their competitive lives this weekend and it presents a great opportunity to earn at-large points to advance to the NCAA Championships."

Competition kicks off Saturday morning at 10 a.m., CT with the women's 6K blue race, in which MU will square off against BIG EAST rivals, Louisville, Providence and Villanova along with in-state adversary Wisconsin. After the women's white race at 10:35 a.m., the MU men are scheduled to leave the start line at 11:10 p.m., for the 8K race, in a field that includes BIG EAST schools Notre Dame, Providence and Syracuse.

The last time out at the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 3, the MU women placed 18th while the men finished 25th. Senior Kyle Saginus paced the men with a time of 24:30 to finish 41st, while on the women's side, junior Jayne Grebinski led the way with a time of 17:45, followed closely by sophomore transfers Laurie Dalrymple and Olivia Johnson.

"I am looking for our whole squad to go out there and give it there best effort, as usual," said Nelson. "Our goal is to earn those at-large points but it if our athletes run their best possible race I will be pleased with the weekend."

The competition will include 164 of the top squads in the country, as there are 28 ranked teams on the women's side and 30 on the men's.

The 2008 NCAA Division 1 Championships will be hosted by Indiana State University and held at the same venue on Nov. 24.
