Tod Kowalczyk completed his first season as assistant basketball coach at Marquette in 2000-01. Among Kowalczyk's duties are on-campus recruiting, player development and game preparation.
Kowalczyk, a native of Green Bay, was a valued member of Kevin Bannon's staff at Rutgers for three seasons prior to his appointment at Marquette during the summer of 2000, and helped the Scarlet Knights to NIT appearances in 1999 and 2000. He was instrumental in bringing in back-to-back recruiting classes that were regarded among the Top 25 by many analysts and, during the 1998-99 season, he helped lead RU to an overall record of 19-13. After serving as an assistant his first two seasons, he was promoted to Associate Head Coach prior to the start of the 1999-2000 campaign.
Prior to his stint at Rutgers, he served under Bannon at Rider from 1993 through 1997, and helped that program compile a ledger of 72-45 along with a berth to the 1994 NCAA Tournament. Before arriving at Rider, he spent two seasons as an assistant at both St. Anselm College (1991-93) and New Hampshire (1989-91). In each of his two years at St. Anselm, the team earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament and one of the classes that Kowalczyk recruited was ranked No. 5 in the nation.
"We are fortunate to add someone that has the experience, the knowledge and personality that Tod possesses," said Crean upon Kowalczyk's hiring. "He has deep roots in Wisconsin and owns both a strong basketball mind and is in the midst of a very successful coaching career. We've been friends for over a decade and I have enjoyed watching his progress. I'm glad that he is part of the Marquette program. Along with Dwayne Stephens and Darrin Horn, Tod gives us a strong coaching staff."
The 35-year old Kowalczyk is a 1988 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth and, as a forward on the basketball team, helped UMD to four consecutive National Tournament appearances. During his college career, he earned a Most Valuable Player award as well as all-conference and all-district accolades. Off the court, he excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-America honors while receiving a bachelor of applied science in health education and physical education. While at Rider, he received a master's degree in educational administration. He is the son of Rod Kowalczyk, the former long-time coach and athletic director of DePere High School.
"The chance to come to Marquette and join the basketball program is a great opportunity for me," said Kowalczyk. "This allows me to work with one of the up-and-coming programs in the country. I have known Coach for a long time and consider him one of the best in the business. To work with Tom and to be close to my family was an opportunity that I just could not pass up."
Tod is engaged to Nicole Diomede.
