Marquette drops 86-72 contest to St. John's at MSG

NEW YORK - Andrew Rowsey had his sixth 20-point game of the season, but Marquette was unable to overcome St. John's on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, falling 86-72.
The Golden Eagles (14-8, 5-5 BIG EAST) led by six midway through the first half before the Red Storm shot out to an eight-point edge right before the end of the frame. St. John's (11-13, 5-6 BIG EAST) went on to build its lead to 17 in the second half and held off a late MU run as the Golden Eagles pushed the game to single digits.
Rowsey scored 21 points and hit four 3-pointers in the loss for Marquette, while Sam Hauser was the only other Golden Eagle in double digits with 14 points.
Junior college transfer Bashir Ahmed posted a game-high 23 points for the Red Storm and the freshman guard duo of Shamorie Ponds and Marcus Lovett had 18 and 17, respectively.
Marquette returns to action on Satuday afternoon at DePaul.
