NEWARK, N.J. - The Marquette University men's basketball team (11-12, 3-8 BIG EAST) held on for a 57-54 victory in BIG EAST Conference action at Seton Hall (15-8, 5-6 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon in Newark, N.J.

Sophomore guard Jajuan Johnson and junior forward Steve Taylor Jr. led the way offensively with 14 points each, which marked a season-high in conference action for both players. Sophomore center Luke Fischer finished with 10 points and four blocks.

The Golden Eagles, playing with just seven scholarship players, jumped out to a quick 17-4 lead to mark its largest lead of the game. MU maintained a double-digit lead well into the second half, but was forced to hang on in the closing seconds. A pair of free throws by freshman guard Duane Wilson put MU ahead 57-54 with 4.8 seconds on the clock, but the victory wasn't secured until SHU's Sterling Gibbs missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Leading scorer Matt Carlino missed the game after developing a concussion following the team's loss on Feb. 4 at No. 7/7 Villanova.

Marquette held Seton Hall to just 30.5 percent from the floor from the game after the Pirates had netted 80 points in the first matchup between the two programs less than two weeks ago.

The victory snapped a six-game losing skid, which marked the program's longest since the 1990-91 campaign.

MU returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 10 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center when the squad welcomes Xavier to Milwaukee for an 8 p.m. CT opening tip on FOX Sports 1.
