Howard's 34 Leads Marquette Past Xavier, 83-61
Feb. 18, 2017
Howard’s career-high 34 points came on an 11-for-18 shooting performance, including 9-for-12 from beyond the arc. It marked a new single-game record by a true freshman at Marquette, surpassing Henry Ellenson’s 32-point effort against Butler from a season ago.
The Golden Eagles (16-10, 7-7 BIG EAST) used a 19-0 run behind the strength of Andrew Rowsey and Howard, while holding Xavier (18-9, 8-6 BIG EAST) scoreless for 5:47 early in the first half to stake a considerable lead it would not relinquish.
Rowsey scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half, while adding seven assists in his third starting assignment of the season. Haanif Cheatham had a strong effort as well, registering 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting and a season-high eight rebounds.
MU shot 41 percent (26-64) from the floor, including 13-for-36 from three-point range and 18-of-20 from the free throw line. Marquette held the top-rebounding team in the BIG EAST at bay, outrebounding the Musketeers, 41-34, despite Xavier entering the contest with a +8 margin for the season.
The Musketeers shot 42 percent (23-55), while going just 2-for-17 from three. XU put four players in double figures scoring led by Sean O’Mara’s 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while RaShid Gaston chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Marquette will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 21, when it takes on St. John’s on Al McGuire Night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with a national television broadcast set to air on FS1.
