AP - Lazar Hayward led all scorers with 27 points, as Marquette pulled away late to post a 71-61 win over Xavier in the first round of the Old Spice Classic.

Jimmy Butler recorded 15 points, six rebounds and four blocks for the Golden Eagles (5-0), who advanced to play Michigan in the semifinals on Friday. The 15th-ranked Wolverines defeated Creighton in overtime earlier Thursday.

Maurice Acker chipped in 11 points, five steals and four assists for Marquette, which took a 33-29 lead into halftime.

Xavier began the second half on a 9-3 run and Jordan Crawford made 1-of-2 at the foul line to make it 38-36 in favor of the Musketeers. Acker drained a three-pointer to put Marquette on top, 45-40, but Xavier countered with nine straight points.

The Musketeers led 55-53 after a three-point play by Jason Love with about six minutes remaining. But Marquette pulled away with an 11-0 burst. Hayward knocked down consecutive treys and David Cubillan nailed a three before Butler capped the run with a pair of free throws for a 64-55 advantage.

Marquette maintained a comfortable lead the rest of way.

Love recorded a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 19 rebounds for the Musketeers (3-1), who got 11 points from Mark Lyons.
