MILWAUKEE - Haanif Cheatham's 24 points and Henry Ellenson's third-straight double-double pushed the Marquette University men's basketball team past Jackson State, 80-61, on Sunday afternoon at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
The Golden Eagles (4-2) won their third-straight game by shooting 50.8 percent from the floor (30-of-59) and posted 23 assists on their 30 made baskets.
Cheatham was perfect on all four of his attempts from 3-point range and also coverted all six charity tosses. Ellenson added a career-best five assists, while low post mate Luke Fischer posted six blocks.
Marquette returns to the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Wednesday, Dec. 2 to take on Grambling State at 7 p.m.
This matchup marked the first-ever meeting between Marquette and Jackson State. It was MU's 19th game against a Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent. Following the win, the Golden Eagles are now 19-0 all-time against the SWAC.
Marquette opened up a 28-17 lead on the strength of two separate 7-0 runs in the first half. The starting five combined for 23 of the teams' first 28 points.
Marquette committed just six turnovers in the first half, which ties their second lowest mark of the season. The Golden Eagles committed four turnovers in the first half against Belmont in the season lid-lifter.
Marquette also tallied seven steals in the first 20 minutes and were able to score six points off of those JSU miscues.
Jackson State was led in the first half by senior Raeford Worsham, who recorded 15 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists in the half. MU was led by freshman Haanif Cheatham, who added 10 points while shooting 5-of-5 from the free throw line in the first half.
Marquette began the second half with an 8-0 run, opening up a 46-28 advantage over the Tigers.
Jackson State entered the bonus with 12:31 left in the second half. Though, the Tigers only managed five free throw attempts for the remainder of the game.
For the fifth time in six games this season, Marquette featured four players in double figures scoring. Duane Wilson has scored 10-plus points in all six of MU's matchups, while Luke Fischer and Henry Ellenson have done so in five.
Freshman Matt Heldt recorded his first career basket and points on a second half layup. The 6-10 center is now the sixth player to notch their first points in an MU uniform this season.
Freshman Henry Ellenson recorded his fourth career double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 boards to go along with a career-high 5 assists.
Averaging 15.2 points per contest, Henry Ellenson is one of four Golden Eagles averaging in double figures this season along with Luke Fischer (14.2), Duane Wilson (14.3) and Haanif Cheatham (10.6).
Jackson State's Raeford Worsham also recorded a double-double. The senior tallied season-highs with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Freshman guard Haanif Cheatham recorded a career-high 24 points, doubling his previous best of 12, which he did against both Iowa and Arizona State. He went 7-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-4 from three-point range and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
The Golden Eagles registered a season-high with nine three-point field goals on 26 attempts (34.6 percent). Their previous high of seven made three's occurred on two occasions against Iowa and LSU.
