Mayo Helps No. 11 Marquette Topple Northern Colorado, 93-72
Dec. 17, 2011
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Freshman Todd Mayo replaced suspended star Darius Johnson-Odom in the starting lineup and scored 22 points to lead No. 11 Marquette to a 93-72 victory over Northern Colorado on Saturday.
Tate Unruh had a career-high 25 points for Northern Colorado (3-7), the defending Big Sky Conference regular-season and tournament champions. Unruh made five 3-pointers.
Johnson-Odom, who is averaging 18.8 points, 3.3 assists and 3.2 points per game, was suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules. The school announced the penalty before the game and said the senior guard is expected to return Monday at LSU.
Johnson-Odom was in uniform but his replacement did just fine. Mayo scored 14 points, equaling his previous career high, in the first half, including four 3-pointers and eight straight points early in the game.
Marquette led 47-30 at halftime and expanded its advantage to 53-32 before Northern Colorado put together a 15-3 run to pull within nine on Unruh's putback with 13:11 left.
But the Bears couldn't get any closer.
Tim Huskisson, a reserve, finished with a career-high 17 points for Northern Colorado.
Marquette outrebounded the Bears, 43-26.
Northern Colorado got off to a rough start when Mike Proctor, a 6-foot-8 senior forward averaging 8.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, apparently injured his right ankle on the opening jump ball. He was helped to the locker room and did not return.
Johnson-Odom is the second Marquette starter to be suspended recently for a violation of team rules. Starting point guard Junior Cadougan didn't play in Marquette's 61-54 victory over Wisconsin on Dec. 3.
