All-Time Series Even After MU Win In Lidlifter
The all-time series is now tied 11-11 after Marquette’s 86-76 victory on Dec. 28, 2016 in the league lidlifter for both programs.
All but two of the matchups have come since Marquette joined the BIG EAST in 2005-06. The programs first met during the 1941-42 campaign and the Hoyas were able to claim a 35-34 victory. The next meeting didn’t come until the 1971-72 season and Marquette posted a winning 88-44 decision.
The series resumed in 2005-06 and the squads have met on 20 occasions since that year. Marquette’s most recent win (80-72, OT) at the Verizon Center came on Jan. 20, 2014.
Freshman guard Markus Howard led three players in double figures with 23 points in the first meeting between the two programs this season and senior guard Jajuan Johnson chipped in 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Senior center Luke Fischer narrowly missed a double-double, collecting eight points and 10 rebounds.
Fischer Picking Up Production At Both Ends
Senior center Luke Fischer collected his third double-double of the season and eighth of his career on Tuesday night, finishing with 19 points and 13 rebounds against Butler.
In 34 minutes of action, he was 9-of-14 from the floor and also chipped in four blocked shots and a pair of assists. The Germantown, Wisconsin native’s effort continued a recent trend of increased production. Over the course of the last six games, he is contributing a team-best 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest. He has combined to shoot 70.9 percent (39-of-55) from the floor in those outings and has also chipped in 3.3 blocks per outing.
For the season, Fischer is ranked second in the conference and fifth in the nation in field goal percentage (.651). He is on pace to join an exclusive club of Marquette players who have collected 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds. He currently owns 954 points and 471 boards and is already fifth all-time at MU in blocked shots (140).
Howard, Hauser Among League’s Top Freshmen
Marquette’s freshman duo of Sam Hauser and Markus Howard has had a big impact on the team’s success in 2016-17 and as a result the two newcomers are among the best in the BIG EAST Conference this season.
In league only games, Howard is ranked among the league leaders in four categories, including scoring (13th, 15.0 ppg.) and 3-point field goals made (2.8 3-pt FG per game). He tops the roster in scoring in BIG EAST outings and is shooting 50.8 percent (8th) from the floor.
Hauser is second on the squad and 18th in the league in rebounding (5.1 rpg.), with only two freshmen currently averaging more in conference outings. The Stevens Point, Wisconsin native is also 12th in 3-point field goal percentage (.400) and defensive rebounds (3.8 drpg.).
