McNeal Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year
March 6, 2007 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore guard Jerel McNeal was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, the league office announced. McNeal was named second-team all BIG EAST a day earlier. McNeal led the team with 76 steals on the season, the fifth best single season total in Marquette history. McNeal's per game steal total is the second best in the BIG EAST and he ranks 12th on the national steals list. McNeal is the only player in the BIG EAST to average at least 2.0 steals per game and 4.0 rebounds per game. McNeal is the first guard to win the award since the 2001-02 season, when John Linehan of Providence claimed the award. He is the fifth guard to win the award. McNeal joins a long list of storied players who have been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year including Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo, Allen Iverson and Emeka Okefor. Marquette is the tournament's sixth seed and will play 11th seeded St. John's at 9 p.m. (EST) in the first round on Wednesday, March 7 in Madison Square Garden in New York on ESPN and ESPN360. The winner of that game will advance to the quarterfinal round to take on third-seed Pittsburgh at 9 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, March 8. Marquette has not played St. John's this season.
