Marquette To Play For Regular Season Title
Marquette enters play Saturday with a chance to earn at least a share of the program's first-ever BIG EAST Conference regular season title.
A victory over St. John's would give the Golden Eagles a 14-4 mark, which at the very least would be good enough to share the championship with Louisville and/or Georgetown. MU has claimed just a pair of regular season league titles in program history, finishing first in the Great Midwest Conference in 1993-94 and topping Conference USA in 2002-03.
The Golden Eagles were picked to finish seventh in the 2012-13 preseason coaches poll.
Series With St. John's Dates Back To Al McGuire Era
Marquette owns a 14-6 advantage in the all-time series against Al McGuire's alma mater of St. John's.
The series dates back to the 1959-60, with St. John's claiming wins in five of the first seven matchups. Since 1966-67, however, Marquette owns victories in 12-of-13 outings and that includes a run of 11-straight decisions.
MU posted an 83-64 win on Jan. 11, 2012 in the BMO Harris Bradley Center in the most recent matchup between the two programs.
Blue Fuels Second-Half Rally At Rutgers
After netting a total of just 19 points in the previous three outings, MU's Vander Blue found his shooting touch at Rutgers and helped the Golden Eagles rally from a 12-point second half deficit.
The Madison, Wis., native finished with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field in 36 minutes of action. He knocked down all five of his free throw attempts and also found time to contribute four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Blue's scoring output marked his highest since collecting a career-best 30 points in the Jan. 28 victory over USF at home. The team's leading scorer at 14.3 points per game, Blue ranks 15th in the league in scoring through games of March 6.
Jamil Wilson's Consistency Key In Recent Outings
Junior forward Jamil Wilson netted 10 points (all in second half) in the win at Rutgers, continuing a recent trent of offensive success.
The Racine, Wis., native has reached double figures in points in eight of the team's last nine outings and is contributing 11.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest in those games. He is shooting 46.5 percent (33-of-71) from the field overall and 40.0 percent (12-of-30) from long distance since the Feb. 6 victory at USF.
In the team's first 20 games of the 2012-13 campaign, Wilson reached double figures on a total of just eight occasions.
