MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's basketball team will make its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship when the squad faces No. 6 Xavier as the No. 11 seed in the NCAA Second Round Friday, March 18 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Golden Eagles are 20-14 overall and won two games in the BIG EAST Championship for the second year in a row to secure their spot in the field of 68.

Senior Jimmy Butler leads Marquette with 16 points per game, while juniors Darius Johnson-Odom and Jae Crowder average 15.9 and 11.7 points, respectively.

The Musketeers (24-7) are the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference regular season champions and are led by A-10 Player of the Year Tu Holloway's 20.2 points per game.

Marquette is 43-16 all time against Xavier and last defeated XU, 71-61, on Nov. 26, 2009 in Orlando, Fla., as part of the Old Spice Classic. It is the first time the two teams have met in NCAA Championship play.

This is the fourth straight season that Marquette has appeared in a No. 6 versus No. 11 game. And the first time the Golden Eagles have been an 11 seed.

Marquette is 1-2 in NCAA games under head coach Buzz Williams, defeating No. 11 seed Utah State in 2009 before falling to No. 3 Missouri as a six seed in Boise, Idaho. In 2010 Marquette fell in the first round, again as a six seed to No. 11 Washington, 80-78.

It is the first time MU has played in the NCAA tournament east of the Mississippi River since 2007 when Marquette was sent to Winston Salem, N.C.

Marquette's seed is the lowest it has received since it was a No. 10 seed in 1997.

MU is 34-29 all-time in the NCAA Championship and won the 1977 National Championship.

The Golden Eagles have played 19 games against teams in the NCAA field and are 6-13 in those contests.
