Davante Gardner Invited To USA Basketball World University Games Camp
June 3, 2013
Forward Davante Gardner of the Marquette University men’s basketball program has been invited to the training camp for 2013 USA Basketball Men’s World University Games team June 24-30 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The USA men at the 2013 World University Games, which will be played July 6-17 in Kazan, Russia, will be led by Davidson College’s Bob McKillop, and assistant coaches John Beilein of Michigan and the University of South Carolina’s Frank Martin.
The team’s final roster of players will be determined on June 26 and the travel party will leave for Russia on July 1. Marquette was last represented on the team by Lazar Hayward, who helped the squad to a bronze medal in the 2009 tournament.
“We are extremely happy for Davante and the opportunity to showcase his skills at the international level,” head coach Buzz Williams said. “It’s really as testament to his hard work and development that he has emerged as one of the top players in his age group and the entire experience will be beneficial to his continued improvement.”
Gardner earned honorable mention all-league accolades in 2012-13 and was tabbed the BIG EAST Conference Sixth Man of the Year. He appeared in all 35 games off the bench and contributed 11.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game while shooting 58.5 percent from the floor and 83.5 percent from the free throw line. He helped lead Marquette to a 26-9 overall record, a share of the conference’s regular season title and a trip to the Elite Eight.
Organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the World University Games is a multi-sport competition open to men and women who are between the ages of 17 and 24 (born between January 1, 1989 and December 31, 1995), and are or have been within the past year, a student at a college or university.
