Jimmy Butler named to U.S. Olympic Roster

MILWAUKEE - Former Marquette University star Jimmy Butler has been named to the United States men's basketball roster for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, becoming the third Marquette player to represent the Stars and Stripes in the Olympics.

Butler is a two-time NBA All-Star with the Chicago Bulls and has been named to the All-NBA Defensive Second Team in each of the last three campaigns. He led the Golden Eagles to three NCAA Championship appearances during his three seasons at Marquette and helped MU advance to the Sweet 16 in 2011 for the first time since 2003.

The Tomball, Texas native averaged 15.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game during his final season at Marquette in 2010-11 and posted career averages of 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 50.8 percent from the floor and 77.3 percent from the free throw line.

Former MU teammate David Cubillan will also compete in Rio with Venezuela, marking the first time that a pair of former MU men's basketball players will compete in the same Olympic Games.

In total, Marquette athletes have claimed nine medals in the Summer Olympics, led by former U.S. Congressman Ralph Metcalfe, who claimed four medals in sprinting events in 1932 and 1936.
