Marquette Athletics Participates In Al's Run
Sept. 14, 2013
Marquette University student-athletes and athletics staff continued the department's involvement in one of the city's longest running traditions by participating in the 36th Annual Briggs & Al's Run & Walk for Children's Hospital Saturday morning.
The event, which has raised over $14 million with the help of outstanding community support, was founded by former MU men's basketball coach Al McGuire. In 2012, approximately $1 million was collected.
The MU men's and women's basketball teams spent the morning meeting with the Children's Champions. The players and coaches signed autographs, posed for photos and shot hoops with the kids prior to heading to the start line to cheer on the participants.
Members of the men's and women's track & field/cross country programs participated in the race and both the men's and women's lacrosse teams were represented in the field as well. Head Marquette cross country coach Mike Nelson clocked a time of 29:07 to finish among the top runners and volunteer coach Thomas Breitbach claimed second overall.
Head men's basketball coach Buzz Williams addressed the crowd of over 13,000 shortly before the start of the race at 10:30 a.m.
