MILWAUKEE—The Marquette University men’s and women’s basketball teams officially kicked off the 2017-18 season at Marquette Madness at the Al McGuire Center on Friday night to add to the homecoming week festivities.

The women’s squad was first to be introduced in traditional Marquette Madness fashion. The Golden Eagles unveiled their first BIG EAST Championship banner from the 2016-17 season to the roaring crowd. The reigning BIG EAST Tournament champions transitioned into their intrasqaud scrimmage where the White team topped Blue 29-21. The White team consisted of lone senior Shantelle Vallentine, juniors Natisha Hiedeman, Erika Davenport, sophmore Isabelle Spingola and freshman Selena Lott and Myriama Smith Traore.

The evening shifted to introducing the men’s team for the 2017-18 campaign, including Marquette’s five new Golden Eagles in Theo John, Greg Elliott, Ike Eke, Jamal Cain and Ed Morrow. The Gold team, Jamail Cain, Markus Howard, Matt Heldt, Harry Froling and Ed Morrow, notched a win 47-42 over the Blue team. The annual dunk contest came down to Greg Elliot and Ed Morrow, and freshman Greg Elliot was given the crown to conclude the night.

The women’s team will open their season against New Mexico on the road on Monday, Nov. 13, while the men’s squad will host Lindenwood for an exhibition game at the BMO Harris Bradley Center Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. Central time.
