Marquette Hosts Mount St. Mary's In 2017-18 Lidlifter
Nov. 8, 2017
The Marquette University men's basketball team (0-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) opens its 101st year of play on Friday night at 8 p.m. CT when the squad hosts Mount St. Mary's (0-0, 0-0 NEC) at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in non-conference action. FS Wisconsin will feature the television broadcast, with Jeff Levering (play-by-play) and Stephen Bardo (analyst) calling the action.
MU Hoping To Continue Season-Opening Success
Marquette has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success on opening night and hopes to continue that trend in 2016-17 when the team faces Mount St. Mary's in the first game of the year.
The Golden Eagles are 84-16 (.845) all-time in campaign lidlifters and have claimed 16 of their last 18 overall. Marquette had an impressive streak of 29 years in which it started 1-0, dating from 1960-61 to 1988-89.
MU defeated Mount St. Mary's 91-37 on November 11, 2011 in the 2011-12 lidlifter, the only previous meeting between the two programs. Guard Darius Johnson-Odom led six players in double figures for the 22nd-ranked Golden Eagles.
Marquette is 6-1 all-time against programs currently in the Northeast Conference.
Marquette Looking To Continue Tourney Success
Marquette is hoping to continue a trend of recent success in regular-season tournaments when the team opens play in the 2017 Maui Jim Maui Invitational Friday night in one of the event's regional games.
The Golden Eagles are 33-11 overall since 2004-05 in multi-team events, including championships at the BCA Classic (2005), Great Alaska Shootout (2006), CBE Classic (2007), U.S. Virgin Island Paradise Jam (2011) and Legends Classic (2015).
MU appeared in the championship contest of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational (2007 - lost to Duke), Chicago Invitational (2009), Old Spice Classic (2010) and DIRECTV Wooden Legacy (2013).
Roster Transition Still A Work In Progress For Young Team
While the Golden Eagles are entering their fourth season under head coach Steve Wojciechowski, the team still finds itself working through the final stages of the transition (only one senior - Andrew Rowsey).
For the first time, the roster is completely comprised to players recruited by Wojciechowski and his staff. However, only two of those individuals (Haanif Cheatham and Matt Heldt), own more than one season of experience in a Marquette uniform. Sophomores Sam Hauser and Markus Howard were significant contributors in their respective debut campaigns, but only Cheatham has more career starts (58) among the returnees.
Marquette's quartet of departures (Luke Fischer, Jajuan Johnson, Katin Reinhardt and Duane Wilson) left with it a wealth of playing experience, having accounted for 328 total appearances and 184 starting assignments.
