Marquette Basketball Partners with SHARP Literacy, WaterStone Bank

Nov. 8, 2017

Milwaukee, Wis. – Marquette Basketball’s free throws will be delivering more than points this season. For every free throw the Marquette men’s and women’s basketball team makes, WaterStone Bank will be donating $5 to SHARP Literacy.

“Educating and energizing our students is a value of WaterStone Bank carried out by fine organizations like SHARP Literacy," President and CEO of WaterStone Bank Doug Gordon said. "We are proud to partner with Marquette Basketball in support of SHARP Literacy’s mission of promoting lifelong learning.”

In addition to the fundraising campaign, SHARP Literacy, in conjunction with the Marquette men’s basketball team, has developed the "Reading with the Golden Eagles" program.

Throughout the school year, members of the team will be reading to elementary school children throughout the Greater Milwaukee Area, challenging students to read with a goal of developing a lifelong love of learning.

"Service is one of the pillars of our program. I am very proud with our partnership with SHARP Literacy and their mission to help children be lifelong learners," head men's basketball coach Steve Wojciechowski said. "Our players thoroughly enjoy the ‘Reading with the Golden Eagles’ program and making a positive impact in the Milwaukee community.”

"A big part of our program is being selfless, and SHARP Literacy helps us as student-athletes display that as well as inspire the youth and the community of Milwaukee,” sophomore guard Markus Howard said.

"This partnership program brings reading to life for our students," President and CEO of SHARP Literacy Lynda Kohler said. "They read and interact with Marquette Golden Eagles players, and learn the importance of education and working hard in school. These meaningful and inspirational visits have a lasting effect on our students.”

Marquette men’s basketball next school visit is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 9 from 8 to 9 a.m. Central time at Messmer-St Rose. Please reach out to Lynda Kohler (414-745-4633) if you have interest in attending this event.
