Prep Point Guard Derrick Wilson Inks With Marquette
Nov. 10, 2010
Milwaukee - Derrick Wilson, a standout point guard at the prep level, has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Marquette University men's basketball program, head coach Buzz Williams announced Wednesday afternoon.
Wilson, a 6-0, 215-pounder, will arrive on campus this summer and have four years of eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
"We have been recruiting Derrick for a long period of time," Williams said. "Throughout it all, he has been loyal to us, and I genuinely admire that. His background as a person, and as a player, in my opinion, fits perfectly with our culture here.
"He grew up in a military home and has played his prep career at a private institution, so he completely understands what we are about on and off the floor," Williams added. "He has a body that is ready to compete at this level and I believe his instincts are above most at his age."
Wilson averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 assists, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game as a junior at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn., under head coach Fred Benjamin. He was named first team all-league in 2009-10 for the third time in his career and claimed player of the year accolades in the tri-state area for the second-straight season.
As a sophomore, Wilson chipped in 19.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per outing and helped lead the team to the semifinals of the tri-state tournament. He was tabbed to the tri-state first team squad and claimed a pair of most valuable player honors during regular season tourney action.
During Wilson's tenure the program has claimed three league titles and lost just one game in conference play. The team has also finished first in the tri-state area and completed in the all-region tournament in each of the last three campaigns.
Wilson competes for the New York Gauchos on the AAU circuit, a program always among the nation's best. The team's recent titles include a national championship and several first-place finishes at events including the Lebron James Shooting Stars Classic. He has participated in the NBPA Top 100 Camp on two occasions, as well as the adidas Phenom 150 Camp.
A former running back at the prep level, Wilson received early interest from coaches at the collegiate level. He was the player of the year in New England and helped the squad to the title as a sophomore. He also lettered in track & field and set several records as a member of numerous relay teams.
Wilson joins forward Juan Anderson (Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley HS) in Marquette's 2011 recruiting class. |
