Marquette To Host Centenary Friday Night In Pepsi Season Opener

The Marquette University men’s basketball team officially begins the 2009-10 campaign when the squad hosts Centenary at the Bradley Center Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Pepsi Season Opener features a ticket special that features buy-one, get-one free options for all seats. Friday’s matchup opens a four-game homestand to begin the year. MU will also host Maryland Eastern Shore (Nov. 17), Grambling (Nov. 21) and South Dakota (Nov. 24) before heading to the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla. MU Looks To Continue Season-Opening Success The Golden Eagles are 77-15 all-time in campaign lidlifters, including a 95-64 victory over Houston Baptist to begin the 2008-09 season. MU owns an eight-game winning streak in season openers and has claimed nine of its last 10 overall. The Golden Eagles had an impressive streak of 29 years in which it started 1-0, dating from 1960-61 to 1988-89. The squad has claimed 17 of its last 18 season openers. Opening night notes: In 1923, Marquette allowed only five points against Milwaukee Normal in a 22-5 victory ... MU has hit the century mark twice in season openers, scoring 107 versus North Dakota (1960) and 106 against Charleston (1980) ... the squad’s lone overtime lidlifter came against UNLV (1994), an 82-74 victory. Golden Eagles To Meet Gents For Third Time Marquette has claimed the first two meetings, most recently posting a 66-47 victory on Dec. 1, 2000. The teams matched up during the 1977-78 campaign, with MU earning a 72-56 decision en route to an NCAA regional appearance a year removed from a national championship season.
