The Marquette University men’s basketball team wraps up a brief two-game homestand Tuesday night at 8 p.m. CT when the squad takes on SE Louisiana for the first time in program history. Sports32 will feature the broadcast, with Tim Van Vooren (play-by-play) and Jim McIlvaine (analyst) calling the action. The game will also air live on SportsNet New York. The Golden Eagles won’t return home until Nov. 26 when they host UMBC in non-conference action after participating in the 2012 Maui Invitational (Nov. 19-21).
MU Opens Season With Another Victory
Marquette defeated Colgate Sunday afternoon 84-63 in the squad’s season opener, improving MU’s record to 81-15 in campaign lidlifters.
The Golden Eagles have now claimed 12-straight to start the year and 13 of the last 14 overall.
Junior forward Jamil Wilson led the team with 15 points and classmate Davante Gardner chipped in 14 points and six rebounds off the bench. Each of the 12 players to see action scored for MU and four players (Trent Lockett, Jake Thomas, Steve Taylor, Jr., and Jamal Ferguson) made their respective Marquette debuts.
Golden Eagles To Face Lions For First Time
Marquette and SE Louisiana will be meeting for the first time on Tuesday night, marking MU’s second-straight first-ever meeting with an opponent.
Matchups with Colgate, SLU and NC Central will be the debut outing in each of the series. Marquette is 10-1 all-time against teams currently in the Southland Conference, most recently defeating Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2010-11.
Mr. Anderson Produces Award-Worthy Performance
Slowed by shoulder injuries in 2011-12 as a freshman, forward Juan Anderson appeared in just 24 games in an average of 4.5 minutes per contest. He netted a total of 16 points on the year, but never more than two in any single game.
Finally healthy and able to fully contribute, Anderson enjoyed a breakthrough performance in the season opener versus Colgate. The Oakland, Calif., native finished with nine points and nine rebounds in the win over the Raiders in just 21 minutes of action. He was 4-of-8 from the floor (first career 3-pointer) and also found time to chip in two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
Lockett Proves Value In MU Debut
Senior guard Trent Lockett, who is in his first year with Marquette after transferring from Arizona State, didn’t waste any time to display to Golden Eagle fans his potential value in 2012-13.
The Golden Valley, Minn., native finished with seven points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists in just 19 minutes of action. He was in the starting lineup for his MU debut and finished 3-of-7 from the floor and three of his boards came at the offensive end.
Derrick Wilson Continues Impressive Trend
As a freshman in 2011-12, backup point guard Derrick Wilson turned the ball over on just nine occasions in 33 appearances (two starting assignments).
He continued that trend in the season opener Sunday night, finishing with five assists and zero miscues in 18 minutes off the bench. The Anchorage, Alaska, native also contributed two points and two rebounds. For his career, Wilson owns an impressive 3.2 assist-to-turnover ratio.
