Catching Up With Former Marquette Players Competing In Professional Ranks
Nov. 15, 2009
Milwaukee - It's relatively easy for Marquette fans to follow the four former members of the men's basketball team playing in the National Basketball Association, but a little more difficult to keep track of those players competing in countries around the world. Dwyane Wade continues to remain at a level that places him among the top performers in the league and rookie Wesley Matthews has started the past two outings for Utah. He is the first undrafted rookie to start in the league in 2009-10. Steve Novak has appeared in six games for the Clippers while former teammate Travis Diener has missed the season to date with Indiana due to a toe injury. Below is a quick update on several players playing in the professional ranks. Jerel McNeal remains at home in Chicago while evaluating his opportunities to play abroad. Dominic James is averaging 15.8 points and 4.2 assists per game for Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi in Turkey's top division. He plays alongside former Rhode Island standout Jimmy Baron in the backcourt. Dan Fitzgerald and Chris Grimm are teammates for SAM Basket Massagno in Switzerland. Fitzgerald is contributing 18.0 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while Grimm averages 14.1 points and 10.8 boards per outing in eight games.
Ousmane Barro has appeared in seven games for Hungary's Szolnoki Olajbanyasz, which competes in the country's "A" Division. He is averaging 17.4 points and 10.7 points per game and shooting over 75 percent from the field.
Joe Chapman is averaging 23.0 points and 4.0 assists for Newcastle of the British League. The Eagles are 6-1 on the year. Chapman has also played in Mexico and the Czech Republic during his career. Mike Kinsella is listed on the roster of USC Freiburg in Germany's ProA Division, but has yet to play. Dwight Burke has also not seen action yet for Athletico Bigua in Uruguay. Cordell Henry has signed with Guaros de Lara in Venezuela in 2009-10 after averaging 14.8 points and 3.8 assists per game for Mexico's Halcones UV Cordoba last season. Oluoma Nnamaka is in his fourth season with Carife Ferrara of the Italian League and is contributing 4.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per outing in five appearances. Scott Merritt was the lone player unable to make the hall of fame induction because of his departure date to join Link Tochigi Brex of the Japanese League. In 14 games, he is averaging 11.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for a team with a 10-4 record. |
