Marquette Hoping To Continue Tourney Success
Marquette is hoping to continue a trend of recent success in regular-season tournaments when the team competes in the 2014 Orlando Classic.
The Golden Eagles are now 28-8 overall since 2004-05 in multi-team events including Thursday night’s win over Georgia Tech, including four championships at the BCA Classic (2005), Great Alaska Shootout (2006), CBE Classic (2007) and U.S. Virgin Island Paradise Jam (2011).
MU appeared in the championship contest of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational (2007), Chicago Invitational (2009), Old Spice Classic (2009) and DIRECTV Wooden Legacy (2013).
In the team’s most recent trip to the Orlando Classic in 2009, Marquette defeated Xavier (71-61) and No. 15 Michigan (79-65) before falling to Florida State (57-56) in the championship game.
Marquette-Michigan State Series Dates Back To 1922
Michigan State leads the all-time series 31-23 against the Golden Eagles and the first matchup came during the 1921-22 campaign.
The Spartans have claimed eight of the last nine contests, including a 61-49 decision on March 15, 2007 in the NCAA tournament in the most recent outing. Previous to that game, the two squads hadn’t met since 1956.
Friday night’s matchup will be the second of the young season for the Golden Eagles against a nationally ranked program from the Big Ten. MU dropped a 63-74 decision at No. 20/20 Ohio State on Nov. 18.
Bench Shrinks In Win Over Georgia Tech
Along with the debut of the team’s zone defense against Georgia Tech, the coaching staff also featured a tightened rotation in the win Thursday night.
For the first time this year Marquette had five players (all starters) finish with over 30 minutes of action on the court. Through the first four games, the most the team had reach that mark in game action was three players.
Marquette’s roster currently features only nine active players and that number will move to 10 on Dec. 16 against Arizona State when Indiana transfer Luke Fischer becomes eligible for the first time.
