UCLA Transition
This drill emphasizes both offensive and defensive transition while creating an initial "numbers" situation into a quarter-court match-up situation.

2 teams - 10 - 20 players

Team A - lined up along the sideline facing the court.  Players should be lined up in a position where the "next" player in line is easily distinguishable.

Team B - Lined up along the opposite sideline from Team A.

The first 3 players from Team A position themselves in the middle and on each sideline facing the goal at the free throw line of the opposite end.  The first 2 players from Team B get in the center circle facing the offense.  Team A pushes the ball offensively at the two defensive players from Team B to begin a 3 on 2 offensive numbers possession.  The two defensive players must sprint back in transition as soon as the ball is put in play and communicate "basket" and "ball."  The deepest defender must call "basket" and sprint to put his head under the rim.  The second defensive player calls "ball" and attempts to stop the ball at or below the level of the top of the key.

When the ball (not the wings) passes the half court line, the next player in Team B's line (team on defense) sprints to get a foot in the center circle and joins the team on defense to turn it into a 3 on 3 possession.  Play continues until a basket or defensive rebound occurs.  In either case, Team B gets possession of the ball (either out of bounds on a make or a defensive rebound and outlet) and pushes it to the other end of the floor with all 3 players that are in the game.  After the third player from Team B joins the previous possession, the next two players from Team A go to the center circle and wait for Team B to get possession of the ball and begin an offensive break towards their goal.  As soon as Team B gets possession of the ball, the two defenders on Team A that were waiting at half court must sprint back and call "basket" and "ball."  After the ball crosses half court, the next player in Team A's line must sprint and get a foot in the center circle before joining the possession on defense.

Scoring: Offensive or Defensive scoring

Additions:  To add to the intensity/difficulty of the drill, you may allow the team who just lost possession to play defense until half court on either a made or missed basket.  This creates quick transition from offense to defense but doesn't allow a clear numbers situation at all times.
